It was born and grew up in an area between Puglia and Basilicata. Cultivated between 300 and 600 m, most of the lentil culture grounds fall within the splendid Alta Murgia National Park. Lenticchia di Altamura PGI is a small legume that is absolutely unique in its organoleptic characteristics. Thanks to the characteristics of the soil, the particular Mediterranean climate and the industriousness and experience of local farmers, the European Community has guaranteed the IGP recognition for this product. Altamura Lentils have peculiar characteristics compared to other lentils. In fact it has an excellent consistency and a high content of iron and proteins, ease of cooking and above all a unique aroma and flavor, given precisely by the land of origin and difficult to find elsewhere. In 2007, registration was obtained in the National List of Traditional Agri-food Products and in 2013 the Collective Trademark was filed to protect the consumer on quality, techniques and place of production.
